Hi, Are you based in UK? I also have a N43 engine 3 series 2008 and to start my car it takes a while and then it works. However during driving when I accelerate it causes serious hiccups.
Do you have a part number for the oil-pressure regulator valve? How can I replace it?
Remove oil pan, it's on the bottom right side of the oil pump housing. PN: 11417507648, 11417507755
I have bought a car with an N46 engine. It has low oil pressure when the engine runs. Aside from low engine oil, what are some things that I should check? I am replacing the engine-oil filter and all of the o-rings and oil-filter housing gaskets.
1. Faulty oil pressure sensor (normal open switch). 2. Pieces of broken chain guide inside the oil pickup, oil pump, oil pressure regulator (oil pan needs to be removed, everything inspected and cleaned, and chain rail replaced)
hey question what's the torque for the timing chain guide bolts didn't see it in the video
Top: M7 Guide pin 14 Nm Bottom: M8 Bearing journal 20 Nm
Hello! Awesome video! I have bmw e91 n46 I have check engine on valvetronic. Can I change just a valvetronic-motor?
Yes, but how do you know the servomotor is faulty?
i know its an old post but correct if I'm wrong, crank should always be rotated to the rotation of the engine so clockwise?. In the video you're turning the crank counter clockwise?
Yes, in general it's best to rotate the engine CW - keep the oil pump pumping and chain tight. But during this repair you can rotate the engine CCW because you also have to hold the chain tight against the crank sprocket.
Just recieved the 0.6Nm tool, much appreciated 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Hello I have same engine about same mileage. Smokes blue only when oil is hot and if it stays at idle for a while. CCV to intake elbow was almost fully blocked with carbon. Cleaning elbow reduced smoke but it is still there. Engine runs and pulls great. Are the valve stems gone bad?
Yep, valve stem seals need to be replaced. Smoke after idle is typical symptom.
Did you used m7 or m8 for this operation ? please help me
M7 insert, if my memory serves me correctly

@BimmerZen Do you know what material the screws are made of?
Which screws do you mean?
@@BimmerZen The ones that screw the cylinder head to the block.
@@pitu93 I'm not 100% sure but most probably 10.9 or 12.9 tensile/yield grade. They must be replaced.
It could be timing chain tensioners the N42 engines are famous for failing
Chain tensioner was already replaced with the latest version.
I need a tool like this for a Polaris RZR There's a company called hotcams that makes valve shim conversion kit Makes it a lot easier to adjust the valves they can sell this tool with the kit People wouldn't have to remove the head
Amazing work. Have you done a coolant pump and thermostat replacement DIY on an E90 with N43 (mine is 2008 318i)? Do you need access from above, below or both? Thanks.
I haven’t done it myself, but instructions state that engine should be raised with the engine support bar and the pump can then be removed from the bottom.
so what is your verdict 😅
Rotational play was OK, the main concern was the wobble due to central bearing wear. There was noticeable improvement in sound and clutch engagement after replacing the whole assembly (flywheel and clutch). I think the flywheel would still be usable for another ~50.000 km.
It will work on BMW E39?
I'm not 100% sure but I think it should be very simmilar.
My bmw E90 n46 has valvetronic problem or error code according to OBD2 scanner. I cleared the code but it came back again. Ironically, the engine run fine with no rough idling and no cylinder misfiring. I believe it was because the DME or computer of the car has 'adaptation" capabilility to make engine runs normal. Bmw claims...the valvetronic purpose is to save gasoline of the car. But I don't see much difference of gasoline being used.
I have this exact car. Including the exact same color combination with the red leather interior. I just bought it a couple of weeks ago with only 42,000 miles on it and new tires, in great condition except that the roof motor doesn't work (common problem) and occassionally the power steering goes out. This can be very expensive to fix. The dealer quoted me $10,000. Even just the part alone is $5,000! BUT!!! This is probably the most FUN car to drive that I've ever owned. And I fell in love with the looks. And I've had a decent number of nice cars in my lifetime. 30 so far. And that includes multiple Jaguars, multiple Mercedes (S Class), Multiple BMWs (including a 750Li), multiple Lexus, Cadillac, Corvettes, etc. My main car now is a Genesis G90 Ultimate, and it's an incredibly nice car. Probably the best all round car I've ever had even better than my Mercedes S550. But none of them were quite as much fun as this little Z4. The Corvette came pretty close, but it was an automatic. The Jaguar XK8 convertible came close, but its a bigger, heavier car. More luxurious, and also an automatic. But this little Z4 with the online 6 and the 5 speed stick with the top down. Just gives me pure JOY to drive. It's literally FUN! I di t even feel like listening to the stereo - the engine sounds so good. And the 5 speed keeps you so engaged with the car that you couldn't possibly fall asleep at the wheel. You feel alive and connected to the car every passing moment. It's not a highway cruiser. For longer trips, I take the Genesis . But for short trips to the store, dinner, etc. It is just a blast to drive.
When placing the locking tools at the back, only one fits. Cyl #1 is TDC, exhaust lock tool fits but not inlet lock tool ?
can anyone point out exactly where do the balance shafts get their oil supply? I have an N43 with oil pressure issues.. i just pulled the sump to discover someone has removed the balance shafts. I havent checked properly yet but i need to make sure the oil supply to them has been blanked!
Is your engine n43b16? 1.6 L? They donxt have balancing shafts, fyi.
>Mxx = junk
Looking forward inspecting these components when changing the valve cover gasket at my N42. The engine running fine and perfect yet...
I'm having the same problem on n42b20a but maybe a touch worse and what I found out is that the tiny pipe for oiling those components has little holes which where clogged so there was no lubrication
Yes, very common problem unfortunately. These oil lines need to be cleaned and checked during any job where the valve cover is off.
Can the engine run good with damage valvetronic roller bearing and caps
Depends on the damage. You can get away with a bit of pitting, but not so much with worn surfaces.
I made a short video on the N46 engine with corrosion damage that worked just fine: ua-cam.com/users/shortstY9KdNR65dg?si=wYUQZX7wwopeMQP1
Hi everyone, I did this job months ago, unfortunatelly now that I want to remount the valvetronic unit, I am blocked because I am not sure about the order of the rocker arm.. Someone has the right order? Each one got one letter (J,F,O,A...) and the number 2.
Camshaft should be released ouside in and installed inside out. I don't think it matters but it's logical since you will reduce the eventual lever the valve springs exert on the camshaft when releasing it. It it said that this can "bend" the camshaft but I doubt it.
Delade du den nya kedjan eller var den delad från fabrik?
Hi, will your tool work on a 2012 4 cyl 2.4L eco tech eng? How much are you asking?
can no longer find the message I sent you regarding the lifts, I was saying that unfortunately when dismantling I mixed up the pieces and I wanted to understand if it is a problem to install them randomly, or I don't risk it and get new ones. ps: the engine has 125,000 km
Not ideal, but I would just put them back. It will probaly work just fine with such relatively low mileage.
Great, thanks
thank you for share
Thank you for the information.
Awesome. I was about to replace the pressure sensor. But i should check the level sensor instead. Thanks
Ah shit. Snapped a damn oil pan bolt.

Does the oil pump have a position? What would happen if it is not in the correct position?
Oil pump itself has no "special" position, but the balancing shafts do and they are driven by the oil pump shaft, so in fact, position is as important as for the crankshaft.
@@BimmerZen I changed the head gasket and did the timing, I did it in my garage and I have no chance to remove the crankcase and align the balance shafts. My question is if I could assemble the rest and go to a workshop to align the axles, what do you think? Could the engine break down on the way to the shop?
@@pitu93 I did some testing with the oil sump removed. I managed to replace the chain without disturbing the balancing shafts, but I was very carefull not to rotate the crankshaft in the whole procedure. It's a good chance that the balancing shafts are still in timing, provided that you haven’t rotated the crankshaft with the crankbolt loosend. In that case I would suggest to reassemble everything and just drive the car. If there is no change in noise/vibration, you are OK. In case there is noise/vibration after the repair, you will have to remove the oil sump and make sure the balancing shafts are back in position and engine is retimed.
Update for 2007 - 2009 n46, the intake camshaft no longer has the the rounded end as a reference point for the correct orientation, instead one end is flush with the last lobe and one end is notched, the notched end faces up for correct orientation, exhaust cam is the same as video though.
Hello Master.. May I ask if the N42 engine should add engine oil, if moving much faster engine oil is less, my question.. N42 engine where I need to repair or change parts...
Hi, i‘m repairing a fire damaged E46 and have been supplied a used LCM, following your instructions to 1st check for correct algorithm in the support list, it only finds a partial algorithm match HC912-12 coloured in red and the part number is different, does this mean i cant match to the car.?

Hello, do you know the position of the cylinder head bolts? I have this problem on an n42b20, I don't know where the medium and small screws go.
Position is the same as on N43 engine: ua-cam.com/video/PfQpeamvJ6Y/v-deo.htmlsi=Z9FGy95ySGg0lZ4c 6 longer bolts in the center, smaller bolts on the outside of the block, the 2 smallest on the front. Hi Bimmerzen On my E46 m54 engine, the TDC mark at the front doesn't align with the hole in the flywheel, I tried several different flywheels, I even suspect foul on my crank. The front TDC (crank pulley and front cover) mark aligns and Piston 1 is at TDC but the flywheel mark is off
My 320i Vanos solonoids is sooo stuck can not get it out, i can not even pry it out with a screw driver whilst having vice grips on it an pulling with all my force. yes the liitle 10mm and bracket on both is removed before someone asks
Grab it with adjustable wrench at the connector base and try to rotate it a little bit. Maybe heating up the engine might help?
